William Tecumseh Sherman Gallery
To the left is General William Tecumseh Sherman's signature on the telegram presenting President Lincoln with Savannah, Georgia as a Christmas gift. Having completed the March to the Sea with virtually no communication with the North, it was a welcome relief to the President and Union leaders that the fighting force had made it through the heart of Georgia intact and with little resistance.
The First Day of Issue cover for the United States Post Office stamp honoring General Sherman bore this picture (right) based on an early photograph of the general.
Below is a photo taken of the general much later in life. The wear of years is apparent.
