County:Cobb City:Marietta Type:Museum One floor up in the old Kennesaw House building is a museum that features the history of Cobb County and much of North Georgia. The Marietta Museum of History is divided into three gallerys, the Homelife Gallery, the Civil War Gallery and the General History Gallery. Additionally, a fourth section houses a traveling show of historical importance. The Civil War Gallery essentially highlights the two major campaigns in northwest Georgia during the Civil War, the Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea, plus information on the Great Locomotive Chase. Andrew's Raiders actually planned the theft of the General in one of the rooms of the museum, which was part of an inn known as the Fletcher House. The Homelife Gallery incorporates the finery of Marietta's best, most of which has been donated to the museum over the years. Included in this area is a number of interesting "gadgets" designed to make life easier at the start of last century. The General History gallery offers a glimpse into life in Marietta throughout the years. Take a look at an telephone operator's station and imagine what her job must have been like a hundred years ago! Of course this area has exhibits covering prehistoric inhabitants, American Indians (Creek and Cherokee) up to the Cherokee Trail of Tears, the Georgia gold rush, and the beginning of Lockheed in Marietta as the Bell Bomber Factory Visit their web page
