County:Gordon City:Resaca Type:Roadside The map shows the battle of Resaca, May 14-May15, and the retreat of Johnston's troops after the battle.Under President Franklin Roosevelt the Works Progress Administration, who built the park, was one of the many agencies collectively referred to as "alphabet soup" by critics. Today the buildings that remain are a legacy to a time long past. In Georgia, the crews spread out to build and improve roads, a number of courthouses, the Blood Mountain cabin on the Appalachian Trail, and the original tower at Brasstown Bald. But the stone artisans were only part of the WPA. Artists, writers, and even songwriters worked for the agency. Within the fort-like stone structure that surrounds a small area is a podium with a map cast in iron. The map contains the movements of William Tecumseh Sherman's Union Army against the Army of Tennessee on May 14th and 15th, 1864. The map was cast at Georgia Tech, while the stone was quarried locally.
