About Helen, Georgia

This popular stop in the North Georgia mountains was resurrected as an Alpine village by noted artist John Kollak. Today the third most popular tourist destination in the state, it is situated in the midst of spectacular mountain scenery, with many nearby hiking trails.

Helen, Georgia history

Originally founded as a mill town, Helen was a tourist attraction in the 1940's. With the paving of State Road 75 and the addition of nearby Unicoi State Park, the city felt that it would flourish, but the town languished as outdoors enthusiasts headed into the Georgia Mountains.

A group of local businessmen contacted Kollack, who had been stationed in Bavaria after World War II. He came up with the concept of a Bavarian town. By 1975 the concept had paid big dividends.
