St. Simons, Georgia history

Evidence of long term occupation by Indians is present throughout St. Simons, mostly in the form of shell middens. James Oglethorpe built Fort St. Simons and Fort Frederica on the island in 1736. In 1742 major battles in the War of Jenkin's Ear were fought here, most notibly the Battle of Bloody Marsh.
